JULY & AUGUST

OLD TESTAMENT…
Continue in your reading through 2 Kings and then proceed through the books of 1 & 2 Chronicles. Like 1 & 2 Kings, the books of Chronicles were originally written as one book so should be read with that in mind. These books speak of essentially the same time period as Kings. 1 Chronicles reviews King David’s reign while 2 Chronicles highlights the kings of the Southern Kingdom of Judah after the kingdom was divided. You will see very little reference to the Northern kingdom of Israel because the focus of Chronicles is on the Messianic line of Jesus through the line of Judah. The book of Ezra is a history of reconstruction of the nation as they return from captivity. It speaks of their return and the rebuilding of the Temple. Nehemiah continues with the reconstruction of Jerusalem focusing on the rebuilding of the walls around the city. The book of Esther is a glorious story of redemption. It demonstrates that in all circumstances, God is in control…no matter how dismal our circumstances may seem. The book of Job is one of the five poetical books…the others being Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. Job is a wonderful and encouraging story of perseverance in the midst of trials. It shows the sovereignty of God and His faithfulness in the midst of trials and suffering.

NEW TESTAMENT…
Continue in your reading of Hebrews and then proceed through the books of 1 & 2 Peter. These books were actually letters written by the apostle Peter. They are letters written to encourage all Christians in personal holiness (1 Pet) and to warn against false teachers (2 Pet). They were written around the year 64-65 AD. Next you will read the Gospel of Luke. Even though the Gospels cover the same period of time I like to spread them out over the year as a constant reminder of what the bible is really all about…Jesus! It is one of two gospels not written by an apostle. It is believed that Luke received his information directly from eyewitnesses of all the events surrounding Jesus’ life. Luke reveals Jesus as Savior of the world. 1, 2 & 3 John, were written by the apostle John, to emphasize the love of Jesus (1 Jn), to warn against heresy and false teaching (2 Jn) and to speak praise for loyalty and warning against pride (3 Jn). The book of Jude is written to all Christians to warn against heresy. Heresy means something that is contrary to biblical truth. Revelation is one of the most spectacular books in all of the bible. It speaks of the end of the world , as we know it, proceeded by the great tribulation period, followed by the millennium (1,000 reign of Christ) and then followed by the ushering in of the new heaven and the new earth. What a glorious day that will be! It was written by the apostle John around 95 AD while exiled on the island of Patmos.
