OLD TESTAMENT…
Having completed Leviticus we continue with Numbersand Deuteronomy. Numbers is a reminder of what happens when people rebel against God. It is named Numbers because the children of Israel were numbered once at the beginning of wandering in the wilderness for 40 years and then again when entering the promised land. Deuteronomy means the ‘second law’ and is Moses’ final address to the people. It speaks of the importance of obedience and the dangers of disobedience. The book of Joshua picks up after Moses’ death and speaks of the assurance that obedience to God is rewarded. Joshua’s name means “Yahweh is salvation” and is the same name as “Jesus” in the New Testament. Just as Jesus leads us into the promised land…so does Joshua lead the Israelites into the promised land of Canaan. The book of Judges speaks of a very dark time in Israel’s history when everyone did what was right in their own eyes. It covers a time period of about 300 to 400 years and speaks of a 13 cycles of apostasy (turning away from the faith), captivity, repentance, revival and apostasy all over again. It stresses the importance of remaining loyal to God.
NEW TESTAMENT…
Bear in mind that the book of Acts is the last chronological book of the New Testament. Therefore understand that the remaining books of the New Testament were not written in the order they are listed in your bibles. Upon completion of 1 Corinthians we move into Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. 2 Corinthians speaks of Paul’s proof of his apostleship and his call to address deceivers. I chose James as the next book to get a feel for other New Testament writers. James was a letter to Jewish believers encouraging them to live out their faith expressing the truth that ‘faith without works is dead’. Works don’t save us but are a natural expression of our faith. Romans is one of the most amazing books in the bible. It speaks of the fundamental nature of Jesus’ death on the cross and the basis of man’s standing before a perfect God. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest and earliest of the four gospels written…from the apostle Peter’s perspective. It focuses more on what Jesus did rather than what he said. It is the gospel that speaks most clearly of Jesus as a servant. Paul’s letter to Philemon speaks of the power of a transformed life…through faith in Jesus Christ. Philemon is a runaway slave whom Paul led to the Lord. As a new creation Paul sends Philemon back to his master, once a slave and now a brother. We will conclude our April reading with Paul’s letters to Timothy. 1 Timothy was written to the young pastor of the church in Ephesus. It was meant to instruct Timothy about church government and conduct in God’s household. Paul’s follow-up letter, 2 Timothy was written to encourage Timothy to remain faithful in the ministry even in the midst of suffering.
