Numbers 18:20
Then the Lord said to Aaron: "You shall have no inheritance in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel."
I recall that one of the roughest parts of my life was when I graduated from high school and I began the painstaking process of finding out where my place in the world was. I can still remember the uneasiness of being asked the question, "So, what do you want to do after you graduate?" They weren't saying it, but I felt that I had to know what I was going to do with the rest of my life. How could I possibly know, I was only eighteen years old and for the previous twelve years had led a fairly predictable and protected life?
The truth of the matter is, I never fully knew what my life was all about until I realized that I was created by God for the purpose to bring God glory. Oh how I wish that someone would have nurtured me towards this monumental truth at an earlier age. As the Israelites are wondering through the wilderness because of their disobedience, the Lord speaks to Aaron, I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel. The Lord reminds Aaron that we must never look to anything else to be our portion beyond Him. He is to be our inheritance, He alone is to be our future.
I am sure that as Aaron heard these words, he would think of his error of listening to the people and worshipping the golden calf (Exodus 32). In fact, I am sure that Aaron thought about his foolish mistake often. As we look at our lives, how many golden calves have we constructed? How many are currently under construction? How many times have we failed to remember that God is our portion and our inheritance. Paul tells us, in Ephesians 1:11-12, in Christ we have obtained an inheritance...according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will...to the praise of His glory.
Father, may we remember this week that you are our portion and inheritance and that we need nothing else. Forgive us for the 'golden calves' in our lives and remind us daily of why we were created. Thank you for giving us purpose. May our lives glorify you this week and always. In Jesus' name...Amen.
I pray that you have a blessed week of His peace as you realize that you need not fret about what you are going to do with the rest of your lives. You have an inheritance through Christ and He wants to work all things according to the counsel of His will. Let Him, and your life will be rich!
In His love,
Pastor Ron
