Psalm 131:1
LORD, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters,
Nor with things too profound for me.
Years ago when my children were little I would read them stories and one of my
favorites was a story entitled, "Boy was I mad!". It was the story of a little boy
who got mad and decided to run away, of course it was just for a day…the way that
little boys run away. As he was running away, he got distracted with all sorts of
things…workmen doing construction, ants crawling through the cracks of a sidewalk
and a number of other things. Before he knew it, he forgot that he was mad and on
his way home began to marvel at things we do not understand. At one point he looked
at some birds in the sky and said, "…and I wondered how it is that birds know how to fly?"
I will never forget reading that sentence for the first time and every time after that.
It struck a core deep within my own heart because as I thought about it I wondered the very
same thing. There is so very much about God that we simply do not…cannot and will never
understand. Why? Because He is God! David, the author of so many of the Psalms, declared
this about trying to understand God, Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I
cannot attain it. Psalm 139:6. Job came to the conclusion after much consideration about
why God does the things He does, I have uttered what I did not understand, things too
wonderful for me, which I did not know, Job 42:3. And then there is Solomon, the wisest
man to have ever lived, who came to this conclusion, There are three things which are too
wonderful for me, Yes, four which I do not understand: The way of an eagle in the air, The
way of a serpent on a rock, The way of a ship in the midst of the sea, And the way of a
man with a virgin., Proverbs 30:18-19. If these wise men of old could not understand
certain things about God…what makes us think we can? So…maybe it would be best if we quit
trying to figure God out…and simply enjoyed Him. Oh how much simpler our lives would be!
Father, indeed your ways are too wonderful for us to fully comprehend.
Open our eyes to see the marvelous things around us, not so much to understand them,
but rather to appreciate them and enjoy them in a way that draws us to you. Thank you Lord
that you love us enough to let us experience so much of what we do not understand. May we
ind contentment in the majesty of who you are in light of who you made us to be. In Jesus'
name…Amen.
I pray that you have a blessed week of appreciating the glorious things about God which we may never understand.
Take some time to just stop, listen and look around and appreciate wondering how it is that birds know how to fly.
