John 21:3
Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing."
I will never forget the day I received my draft number in the last military draft of the Vietnam war. It was so low that it was fairly apparent I would be getting drafted and likely be on my way to Vietnam before the year's end. I was working as a cook at a Mexican restaurant at the time, a job I had quit McDonalds for - selfishly, without giving any notice. Needless to say, when I got my draft number, I was not in the best emotional shape. Once again, without notice, I quit the job at the Mexican restaurant. To make matters worse, with my head hanging low, I went back and asked for my job back at McDonalds. It was a confusing time. Peter went back to fishing, to that which Jesus had called him from, because he was confused. Whenever we go back to that which the Lord has called us from…we will find confusion rather than clarity. And it should be no surprise to us when we are not successful. John 21:3 goes on to say that Peter's comrades, two of Jesus' disciples, declared, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. Oh, how we must guard ourselves from hastily going backwards. Peter went back to do what Jesus had called him from…and didn't catch anything until Jesus got involved. This account in John's Gospel goes on to say that once they followed Jesus' instructions they caught more fish than they could possibly load into the boat. The Lord calls us out of things so that He can be involved in everything that we do. When we go back to what He has called us from…we shouldn't be surprised when we catch nothing.
Oh Lord, help us look to You, cling to You and trust You with what You are doing in our lives at the present time…lest we go back to that which You have called us from. When we find ourselves in a state of confusion about things, help us to look to You and wait for Your clarity in the situation. We know that you are not the author of confusion…so keep us fixed upon You that we might always move forwards instead of backwards. In Your name we pray…Amen!
Have a glorious week of moving forward in Jesus. May you be greatly encourage to hold fast to Jesus, trusting that He will keep you from going back to what He has delivered you from. He has an exciting week in store for you!
