Genesis 22:6-10
Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his
hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!"
And he said, "Here I am, my son." Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt
offering?" And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So the two of
them went together. Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and
placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham
stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
When my father was a little boy, his father put him on a ledge several feet off the ground and told him to jump. My
grandfather assured my dad he would catch him. When my dad jumped, my grandfather stepped away and let him fall to
the ground. When this little boy, no doubt confused by what had just happened, looked at his dad he said, "That will
teach you to never trust anyone…not even your own father." As I consider the trust that Isaac had in his father to
allow him to bind him up, with the clear understanding that he was about to be sacrificed, I am astonished. I am even
more amazed when I consider the trust that Abraham had in God…his heavenly Father. What God had asked him to do made
no sense…even in God's economy, and yet Abraham still trusted. He trusted to the point of stretching out
his hand…to slay his son. Of course we know that God did indeed intervene telling
Abraham, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God,
since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.", Genesis 22:12. Unlike my grandfather,
we can always trust our Father in heaven no matter how the circumstances may look. We must guard ourselves from
mistrusting God. He always knows what He is doing even when our surroundings suggest otherwise. This was a supreme
test in Abraham's life -- one he passed with flying colors…not because he understood it…but because he simply
trusted his Father.
Father, help us to trust you in the same manner that Abraham did. We cannot imagine being put to such a
test…but we know that as we look to you with a desire to know you intimately…you will give us the faith to pass any
test we may be confronted with. Thank you for the promise that you will never fail us. In Jesus' name we
pray…Amen!
May you be greatly strengthened this week as you grow in your trust of our Heavenly Father. No matter what
situations you may find yourself in today or this week…trust in God. He is faithful and in the end you will never
be disappointed. Have a glorious week of trusting the Lord with your life.
